Lydia Mack Artist’s Statement:

Creating artwork for me is a bit of a compulsion, almost an obsession. I constantly observe people, animals, insects, landscapes... and think “how would I paint that?” How can I capture the glimmer of light on that butterfly’s wing, or what color is the shadow on that barn’s roof at dusk?” Many of my paintings are inspired by photos I take with my iPhone while walking near my home in New Florence, PA, as well as traveling domestically and internationally. I am often compelled to paint a subject multiple times, striving to do it justice. It’s gratifying to succeed and frustrating to fall short, but there is so much beauty around us, my need to keep trying to capture it is always there.

Lydia Mack Bio:

Art has been Lydia’s passion since she was 4, providing a stable sanctuary from her crazy world as the second youngest of nine siblings. She followed her passion with formal training at Penn State (BS in Art Education) and Kutztown (MS in Education) Universities, followed by many studio classes and workshops at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and several other schools.

Professionally, Lydia was an art teacher for 34 years spanning elementary through high school levels in districts from New Orleans, Louisiana, to Northern California, to suburban Philadelphia. She retired from her position of 20 years at Greater Latrobe Sr. High in June of 2019 where she served as department head and taught a variety of studio art and art history courses.

Lydia lives with her husband, Andy, on a small farm in Fairfield Township, Pennsylvania, spending as much time as possible painting in her studio. She has been professionally showing her work, mostly in Southwestern Pennsylvania, for the past 13 years. Lydia’s work hangs in the Special Collections of the Greater Latrobe School District and many private collections.
